The US is a capitalist society (yes this will be philosophical). Capitalisms greatest need is for there to be individuals which not only struggle to remain individual but work on the subordination of other individuals. The primary 'virtue' of a capitalist society is what was once considered a vice; namely greed. Greed doesn't give a shit about others and a capitalist system usually doesn't give a shit about others either. In essence, CLintons preaching to the wall, especially when talking to a labour conference. The problem isn't with the laborers who "need to love their neighbor," its with the greedy jackasses in charge who horde money and convince us that buying the pants with these amazing zipper pockets rather than last years button pockets who need to be given that message. Damnit I hate capitalism!!!!!! And frankly democracy isn't all its cracked up to be either! Stupid fallen human race!
it sounds like a beautiful concept which our culture will probably manage to turn into a marketing scheme before the end of this year.

the problem with capitalism is that it takes one of the greatest human weaknesses and uses it to the advantage of "progress" (I use quotes, cause some people differ on the definition of progress). but anyway, this weakness, greed, is what often prevents other systems (socialism being the classic example) from working. working for the good of the whole does not please us individually because we don't care for everyone else...just ourselves and those immediate to us. and as nice as it would be if we could all live in a society where everyone gives so that all our needs are met, that ideal is simply not realistic because it denies one the most basic aspects of human nature.
i used the word "problem", but i don't know if thats the right word...
