We only regard those unions as real examples of love and real marriages in which a fixed and unalterable decision has been taken. If men or women contemplate an escape, they do not collect all their powers for the task. In none of the serious and important tasks of life do we arrange such a "getaway." We cannot love and be limited.

wow, very timely. i saw a play today that wrested with this concept. a divorced couple are both remarrying and discover they have adjoining rooms on their honeymoon. they then of course fall back in love with each other and cast aside their new spouses. a bit complicated, but it got me thinking about love and being fully committed to a person.
i recently finished the last book in a serious (rabbit at rest, by john updike) about a man who is always looking for outs in his relationships, never taking seriously all the people he hurts in the process. the four books trace his entire life, and as he matures, he begins to realize how important commitment is and how he has made such a mess because of his itching of never fully committing to anything in the past.
what an intriguing quote. thanks!
today it is overcast and drizzly here in sioux center, a perfect dutch spring day
